In my years of cooking, I have found many amazing slow cooker pork recipes!  I’ve been married for 22 years and I don’t think I started experimenting with slow cooker pork recipes until about 8 years ago.  My husband claimed he didn’t like pork (except for pepperoni and breakfast sausage) and I wasn’t brave enough to try it out with him.  I was a young, inexperienced cook and really had no idea what I was doing.

After being a blogger for a while, often cooking slow cooker recipes, I finally decided that it was time that I find some slow cooker pork recipes.  I’ve been trying many different slow cooker pork recipes and I’ve found that they are all so delicious!  My husband has since converted over to loving pork and realizes that he should have been eating the other white meat all along. He probably even loves it more than chicken.  Imagine that!

How do you Cook a Pork Roast in a Slow Cooker?

Each of the above recipes will show you how to cook a pork roast in the slow cooker, but if you’re looking for general instructions, I will give you a quick overview.

  1. Season your pork roast
  2. If cooking with onions, put them on the bottom.
  3. Place the pork roast on top of the onions.
  4. Pour your sauce over the top of the pork roast.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4 hours.

Do I need to add water to a pork roast in a slow cooker?

No, you don’t have to add liquid to the slow cooker before you cook it.  As you cook your pork roast in the slow cooker, it will naturally draw juices out of it.  However, it will not hurt to add some liquid to help with the moisture and flavoring of the pork roast as it cooks.  I’ve done it both ways, with good results.

Can you cook frozen pork chops in a slow cooker?

Crock-Pot.com says:  “Frozen meats: Can be cooked in a slow cooker, however, it is best to use the following guidelines: Add at least 1 cup of warm liquid to the stoneware before placing meat in the stoneware. Do not preheat the slow cooker. Cook recipes containing frozen meats for an additional 4 to 6 hours on Low, or an additional 2 hours on High.”

I agree, that they can be cooked in the slow cooker, but I’ve found that an extra hour on high or an extra 2 hours on low is usually sufficient, unless you have a very thick piece of meat.  Keep in mind that cooking frozen meat in the slow cooker produces more liquid.

How long do pork chops take in a slow cooker?

It depends on how thick the meat that you are cooking is.  If you are using a thin cut, you won’t have to cook it as long as a thick cut.  Typically, I cook my pork chops in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high.

What is the best cut of meat for Pulled Pork?

Typically you would use a pork shoulder roast, however if you cannot find that, you can just as easily use a Boston Butt.  Both choices will be delicious!

What do you have with pulled pork?

There are many different sides you can have with pulled pork sandwiches.  Here are some of our favorites

  • baked beans
  • coleslaw
  • corn on the cob
  • french fries
  • onions rings
  • potato salad
  • potato chips
  • carrot sticks
  • macaroni & cheese
  • pickled okra

Bacon Garlic Pork Loin

What is the difference between pork loin and pork tenderloin?

Many people get pork loin and pork tenderloin confused, but they are actually 2 different cuts of meat.  The main difference is that pork loin and pork tenderloin are not cut from the same part of the animal.  They even look different.  Pork tenderloin is thin and small, and pork loin is wide enough that you can cut a steak from it.  Typically, pork loins are sold as whole roasts.

How long do ribs take in slow cooker?

Every pork ribs recipe for the slow cooker I’ve seen has said to cook on low for 6-8 hours.  In my opinion, 8 hours is better, because it ensures they get tender enough for the meat to fall off the bone easily.

What goes good with pork ribs?

In my opinion, I think that the same sides that goes with the Pulled Pork, would also go very well with the Pork Ribs.

Here are some of our favorites

  • baked beans
  • coleslaw
  • corn on the cob
  • french fries
  • onions rings
  • potato salad
  • potato chips
  • carrot sticks
  • macaroni & cheese

Can you cook bacon in a slow cooker?

No, I would not cook bacon in the slow cooker.  Cook it in the oven or on the stove top first.  Most slow cooker recipes use bacon as an added topping or something to add a little crunch to the recipe.  Typically you will add it at the end.  The exception would be if you had a bacon wrapped pork loin or something along those lines, then, the bacon would cook in the slow cooker, but it would not get very crispy.  If you choose a recipe like this,

Can you put a frozen ham in a slow cooker?

Crock-Pot.com says:  “Frozen meats: Can be cooked in a slow cooker, however, it is best to use the following guidelines: Add at least 1 cup of warm liquid to the stoneware before placing meat in the stoneware. Do not preheat the slow cooker. Cook recipes containing frozen meats for an additional 4 to 6 hours on Low, or an additional 2 hours on High.”

I agree, that a frozen ham can be cooked in the slow cooker, but I’ve found that an extra hour on high or an extra 2 hours on low is usually sufficient.  For a ham, I would probably do an extra 3 hours on low and an extra 2 hours on high, just to be safe.  Keep in mind that cooking frozen meat in the slow cooker typically produces more liquid.

My Favorite Tools

I have this slow cooker in a different color, but I use it all the time and love it!

For pouring liquid ingredients in, I use my silicone measuring cup set all the time.

For shredding meat, I like to use these pulled pork shredder, meat claws:

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
