Crock Pot Sloppy Joes are a delicious choice for a quick family meal.  Similar to the popular Manwich brand, this homemade version is even better after being cooked in the slow cooker all day.

We love using ground beef for our slow cooker recipes, that’s why we’ve included a list of 20 Ground Beef Slow Cooker Recipes for you today.  You also may want to try our Slow Cooker Pizza Burgers.

It’s been a while since we’ve had our famous crock pot sloppy joes, but it was finally time to give them a try again.  They never fail to please the family!  They are a perfect choice for busy parents who don’t have a ton of time to work on supper. We have 7 kids who love this recipe.  That’s not too bad, since our youngest 2 are the pickiest.

We used to use Manwich sauce all the time, but I have since learned that I actually prefer making my own homemade sloppy joes.  Typically I use the crockpot, but when I forget to put them in the slow cooker, I can always make them on the stove, too.

Crock Pot Sloppy Joes

Why is it called a Sloppy Joe?

There’s a story that’s being passed around that tells us the story.  Sloppy Joes originated from a man called Joe who was a cook at a popular restaurant.  He had a loose meat sandwich that he was experimenting with and he added tomato sauce to it.  He named the messier sandwich after himself and called it a “Sloppy Joe”, as the one who is eating the popular meat and sauce sandwich often needs lots of napkins from the mess it can create.

How Can I Thicken Sloppy Joes?

My favorite way to thicken sloppy joes is by letting it simmer either in the crock pot or in a skillet on the stove, long enough to thicken it up a bit.  You are basically cooking the excess sauce off, and that will help to thicken the sauce so that it is not too runny.

What Do You Serve with Crock Pot Sloppy Joes?

Here are some of my favorite things to serve with crock pot sloppy joes.

  1. Chips
  2. French Fries
  3. Tater Tots
  4. Vegetable sticks
  5. Potato Salad
  6. Fruit salad

Is the nutrition information including the bun. Is it for all of it or just a serving?

Question – – this says it makes 6 servings but calls for 12 buns. Is a serving considered 2 sandwiches? Or should it only be 6 buns?

I changed it to say 12 sandwiches. That makes more sense. 🙂

I grew up in NJ where sloppy Joes are a sandwich made with cold cuts. When I found out about this version I was in love and love this easy recipe that can be made in a slow cooker!

I believe that the soy sauce provides enough salt, but if you tend to like things saltier, feel free to add some if you like.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
