Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff features hamburger meat and mushrooms served in a creamy sauce over egg noodles. It’s always a family favorite!

We love ground beef stroganoff!  If you like this recipe, you may also want to try my Instant Pot Ground Beef Stroganoff, too.

Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff

I have made Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff for years!  It’s always been a family favorite and one that gets asked for often.  It’s one of those meals that just screams mama’s home cooking.  I have 7 kids, 6 of whom still live at home and any time I make this beef stroganoff recipe, they all ask for 2nds and sometimes even thirds.  Some of them like to stir in canned peas to theirs, if I happen to be serving them that night.

Below, I plan to answer any questions that you may have about this super simple recipe.  If YOU have a question that I haven’t covered though, let me know by leaving a comment and I’ll be happy to answer it!

Can You Make Ground Beef Stroganoff in the Slow Cooker?

Yes!  While I have also made it in the skillet and the Instant Pot, I love to just throw ingredients into a slow cooker and go, coming home to the most amazing dinner smells!  Of course, putting this one in the slow cooker will mean that you need to precook your ground beef and also boil your noodles, just before serving, but it’s still more than worth it, using the slow cooker!  You’ll see!

Do I Have to Precook the Ground Beef in this Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff Recipe?

I definitely recommend precooking your ground beef for Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff.  That way you can drain the grease from it so that it doesn’t turn into a greasy slop.  If you would rather not have to precook your ground beef, I recommend using stew meat instead.  It’s delicious with stew meat as well as ground beef and you can trim any fat out that you don’t want in before you start cooking!

I Don’t Like Mushrooms, Can I Use a Different Kind of Condensed Soup for Ground Beef Stroganoff?  Can I Leave the Mushrooms Out?

Yes, any time I’ve been in a pinch, I will use any kind of cream condensed soup that I have on hand.  Cream of Chicken and Cream of Celery are both good options.  Also, yes, you can leave the mushrooms out.  We have several kids who also don’t like mushrooms, so I often leave it out of mine and it’s still really good!  Of course, sometimes, I will saute them up and put them on only mine, because I LOVE mushrooms!

Is There a Substitute for Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup for this Slow Cooker Ground Beef Stroganoff Recipe?

Yes, you can substitute by making a gravy base.  I share exactly how to do that in the post:  3 Substitutes for Canned Cream Soups.

What to Serve with Beef Stroganoff?

There are lots of great things you can serve with beef stroganoff!  The possibilities are limitless.  Here’s what we typically serve with ours:

  • Canned or frozen vegetables, especially peas or green beans.
  • Fresh salad
  • Bread Sticks
  • Garlic Bread
  • Broccoli

Try serving this over french fries (either home made or cooked frozen ones) for a different twist. My family has loved stroganoff for years over potatoes instead of bland noodles.

Did this recipe change? I remember it being with beef stew meat and not browning the onion first. Also I think the sour cream went in with the rest of the ingredients. I always made the other version but when I went to my bookmarks today this came up instead. Do you still have the other recipe?

This is the same recipe, but after years of cooking it, I’ve updated it a little to compare with how I normally cook it. You don’t have to brown the onions with the ground beef first if you don’t want to. As for the sour cream, it’s best to add it at the end so it doesn’t curdle when getting too warm, but if you had no problems with it before, feel free to just add it when you normally did. I hope that helps!

I made this. Assembled all the ingredients into a freezer bag. I had this in my freezer for like a month. Since its a pretty big zip lock bag, I planned ahead, thinking it would take two nights of defrosting before I could throw it into my crockpot. Today’s the day, I took it out of my fridge after sitting in there two days and it’s still as frozen as ever. There’s nothing wrong with my fridge either. Thoughts? Is it safe to have it in there longer?

Sure, you can do that. I would put it in a bowl of warm water to help it along and/or defrost it in the microwave.

What can be used on place of the canned soup? I do not use canned soup mixes. Too much sodium.

    Thank you

This might sound like a silly question, but do I cook this in the (freezer) bag, or out of the bag?

Out of the freezer bag. You could use a crock pot liner bag. Different kind of plastic and sold at the grocery where other bags are sold.

In the past, it has turned out reddish colored if I don't precook it, so I do recommend precooking, just for the look of it, but no, it doesn't have to be.

Hi, I'm a homeschooling mom of a 11,12, and 13 yr. old. We have been emphasizing "life skills" this year, our focus on cooking, pantry and kitchen DO's and Don'ts. I LOVED your idea for bagging the dry goods in the pantry and marking them for the meal they were purchased for. It has really helped us ,my son especially on his night to "manage" dinner and clean up time. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in responding to you! It's doubled if you have a smaller family…of like 4-5 kids, no teenagers. We have a small amount left over for our family of 8, but we have 4 pretty big eaters. I hope that helps.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

  • Linda SearsOwner of Freezer to Slow Cooker Menus

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

  • FranOwner of Freezer to Slow Cooker Ebooks
I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
