Teaching Cursive Handwriting with Classical Conversations Prescripts

Handwriting is one of those subjects that I never get excited about.  I have to teach it, but it’s never very fun to me (or the kids for that matter).  In fact, with my first child, we had many tearful teaching sessions of him being frustrated because he could never get it quite right.  Then, I was frustrated because he just wasn’t listening to my instruction.  Thankfully, I learned a lot from those early days.  We haven’t had the same sort of issues as we’ve gone on to teach 3 more kids how to write, but I can say that they seem a bit bored and not excited about their curriculum.  That is, until we came across Prescripts.

Prescripts Handwriting Program by Classical Conversations

When I was contacted by Classical Conversations to see if I was interested in reviewing their new, just released handwriting program, I was hesitantly intrigued.  When I finally decided to have a look at it a little closer and try it out on my own children, I was excited!  Why?  I had looked over their website and could see this handwriting curriculum was something different than what my kids were used to.  I was hoping that it was something they’d get excited about and it proved to be just that!

What is Prescripts?

Prescripts is a handwriting program that uses the Classical model of copywork of historical documents and Scripture and combines it with art lessons.  Classical Conversations say:

We began with Bible and history lessons, and since one of the primary ways grammar students learn is by copying, we combined important ideas and passages with cursive handwriting and fun art lessons.

There are 4 different levels of books that are available for purchase.  The names of them are listed below in order of difficulty:

  • Cursive Letters & Coloring:  Medieval to Modern World History
  • Cursive Words & Drawing:  Scripture
  • Cursive Sentences & Art Lessons:  Medievl to Modern World History
  • Cursive Passages & Illuminations:  American Documents

What Grade Level is Prescripts Used for?

Because every child learns at a different pace, they have chosen not to label each book with a specific grade or age level.  In order to help you decide which book you’d like, they do offer a general guideline.  It is listed below:

•  Letters: ages 3–7
•  Words: ages 5–10
•  Sentences: ages 7–12
•  Passages: ages 9 through high school

Why We Love Prescripts

There are many different reasons that our family loves our new Prescripts handwriting program!  I, the mom, love that it pulls in Scripture and/or History into their handwriting practice.  We all love that there are art lessons intertwined throughout the copywork.  In fact, when we first got the books, we were thumbing through, trying to decide which child would get which book.  My 13 year old daughter happened to see what we were doing and asked, “Can I have one of those, too?”  Yes, she actually requested to do handwriting!   I’ll take it.  So, of course, this loving mother gave her exactly what she wanted.  “Anything to improve that handwriting, dear!”   We currently have 3 children working through a different book of Prescripts.  I’ve had no complaints!  They each one love getting rewarded for doing their copywork by doing art lessons.

Where Can I Buy Prescripts?

Prescripts is available for purchase through Classical Conversations.  Their normal price is very affordable at $11.99 to $12.99 each, but they are currently on sale for $7.99 to $9.99.

I am interested but have a crazy question……………..what do they expect for the cursive letter "Q?" I ask because I do not care for the majority of the curriculums that make it look like a strange number 2. 😉 So just curious. Thanks for the great review.

Not a crazy question. I don't like those crazy Q's, either. It is not a 2 looking one. It just looks like a Q with a loop at the bottom. So you're in luck! 🙂

Looks neat! Especially for kids who enjoy drawing as well. My fine-motor challenged son would not be quite so excited, but I am sure it would be good for him. I also love that the copywork is scripture and history – awesome!

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
