Most of my bigger kids are gone to “Camp Contented” at their grandparents’ house and that means I have a lot more responsibility when it comes to entertaining my younger children.  It’s HOT outside!  The temperatures have been soaring above 100 on most days.  What can you do during the day to make life a little more fun and interesting for these little ones?  I don’t want to drench myself in sweat by spending the day outside.  AND, I don’t want the spending the whole day with them in front of the television.

Here’s some ideas to keep you going:

  • Read Books, lots and lots of them – Children can learn so much by reading books.  It’s so important to take the time to read to them every day.  We recently visited the library and brought home a new to us selection.
  • Go Swimming in the Bath Tub – Or just take a regular bath.  (some kids may get upset if they realize they’re in their swim gear and not going to an actual pool) Most little ones think taking a bath is fun!  Give them some toys to play with while they’re in there and let them splash away!  Or better yet, let them use bath markers to draw all over the bath tub.
  • Bake Cookies – I know what you’re thinking.  Um….that would heat up the house a lot more!  You could try no bake cookies or you could do what we did a few weeks ago and bake the cookies in your car!
  • Do Craft Projects –  My little ones love making crafts.  Our favorites are the ones that you can trace around their hands.   It just puts a little bit more of them into the project!  We especially enjoyed this lily flower craft.
  • Play at the Sink  – My children have always loved playing in the water at the sink at this age.  Give them some measuring cups and utensils and they fill and pour to their heart’s content!
  • Play a Sorting Game – Toddlers love to sort things.  Let them put all the reds in one container all the blues in another, etc.
  • Make a Maze out of Chairs – Let them walk or crawl through them.  Or better yet, clean out from under your couch by flipping it upside down and let them crawl through while it’s still bottom side up.
  • Play with Tape – Little kids love tape!  You can give them several pieces and let them play around with it, sticking it and unsticking it.  Be prepared to go through tape though.  You also may want to make sure you don’t have any important papers around that they can tape together.
  • Balloon Bounce – Blow up a balloon and bounce it around the room.  Play soccer with it.  See who can keep it in the air the longest.  There’s all kinds of fun to be had with balloons!
  • What do you see? Game – What do you see that is red? blue?  green?  OR you could change it up a bit and tell them you found something red and they have to guess what it is.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
