The Ultimate Guide to Diaper Rash Treatment

Diaper rash can be caused by many things.  Sometimes it’s simple, sometimes it’s not.  Either way, it’s no fun for baby, or mom for that matter.  Let’s get to the bottom of this common problem in babies and toddlers, (No pun intended, haha) and figure out what we can do to eliminate it once and for all.  Let’s figure out the best diaper rash treatment for your baby or toddle!

What Causes Diaper Rash?

I’ve birthed 7 children and have been a mother for 19+ years now, so I have had lots of experience with diaper rashes.  Through my years of figuring things out, I’ve discovered that there are several main causes of diaper rash in babies and toddlers.   I’ve also figured out the fastest way to get rid of it.  First, let’s talk about what’s causing it.  There’s many reasons that your child could be suffering with diaper rash.

Not Changing Diaper Often Enough

I know I’ve been guilty of this before.  For me, it’s worse when they get older.  You get to the point where you only change them when you smell something, but for some reason, that day, your nose isn’t working quite right and you didn’t smell them.  Well, mama, that ain’t gonna work.  Not if you’re trying to prevent a diaper rash anyway.  If you let them sit in their poop or pee for too long, they are much more prone to develop a diaper rash.  (And yes, I’m talking to myself, too!)

Food Allergies

Thankfully, this isn’t one of the things I’ve had to deal with, but I’ve had many friends who have.  If your child is allergic to certain foods, they are much more likely to break out in a diaper rash as a reaction to the food they’ve eaten.  Also, if you’re breastfeeding, they can react to the food YOU’RE eating.  Crazy, I know, but if you want to eliminate diaper rash, especially if it’s the kind that is stubborn, definitely try an elimination diet, to see what baby is sensitive to.  The most common culprits are wheat and dairy.

Sensitivity to Laundry Detergent

OK, this is mostly just for those of you who cloth diaper, but it IS a problem.  Have you thought about changing your laundry detergent?  Sometimes, babies have a reaction to certain kinds of detergents and it means you have to use something with no perfumes or dyes.  It’s worth a try to see if it helps.

Sensitivity to a Certain Brand of Diaper

 

Some moms will find that their child is sensitive to a certain brand of diaper and when they switch brands, the diaper rash clears up.  Other moms find that being in cloth diapers causes worse diaper rash, quite possibly because there is too much urine too close to the skin for too long.  Either way, if you find yourself in a diaper rash quandary, try switching the kind of diaper you use and see what happens.

Yeast Overgrowth

Did you know that sometimes a rash is worse, way worse, because it is caused by yeast?  Usually those rashes have red bumps that sometimes bleed when you use a wipe.  Yeast develops for many different reasons, but the two most common ones that I’m aware of are:

  1.  Too much sugar in the diet.
  2. Baby or mom (if nursing) had an antibiotic that killed the good bacteria in your body.

The obvious way to correct the sugar issue, is to eliminate all sugar until the rash clears up.  But be careful, yeast can even grow because you’ve had to many natural sugars that comes from fruit and fruit juices.

To eliminate the yeast rash caused by antibiotics, eating more yogurt and taking a probiotic will help.

What is the Best Diaper Rash Treatment?

  • Try changing your brand of diapers.
  • Try changing your laundry detergent.
  • Change your baby’s diaper frequently.  This keeps him or her clean and dry for as long as possible.
  • Rinse baby’s bottom after each diaper change, with warm water.  That way, no urine is still sitting against the skin.
  • Don’t put the baby’s diaper on too tight.  Baby needs as much air movement as possible when dealing with diaper rash.
  • Leave the diaper off for a while.  Like I said, baby’s butt needs some air and leaving it off is a great way to get it.  Be sure to put a blanket or changing pad under baby just in case.
  • Wash hands after every diaper change.  That way, if it IS a yeast rash, you won’t spread it to other places.
  • Use a great Diaper Rash Cream, like Boudreaux’s Butt Paste.    My absolute favorite brand of diaper rash cream is Boudreaux’s Butt Paste.  In fact, the last time I used it on my 2 year old, she was just starting to get a rash and she brought it to me because she knew it would help her.  I mean, come on?  The 2 year old knows this cream is amazing?!  It must be pretty amazing, right?   It heals rash so fast, it’ll quickly become your favorite diaper rash cream!

Grab some Butt Paste

Many years ago, I first found a sample of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste in a doctor’s office.  To be honest, I took a sample to try, just because I wanted some free diaper rash cream.  But, I was really surprised by the results when I used it.  The next time my baby had a rash, I tried the original formula of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and was thrilled with the results!  It seemed to me that it cleared diaper rash faster than any other brand I’ve used.  I instantly ran out and bought myself a full sized tube of Boudreaux’s Butt Paste.  I’ve since learned that they have 3 different versions of Butt Paste, all of which have safe, simple ingredients!  They have:

  • Original – You can use this with every diaper change if you want to help prevent rash before it happens, or can use it on minor rashes after it’s developed.
