Mr. Sidetracked and I were at an auction one day when we saw a huge stack of old, fireproof doors. They were HUGE and heavy! We laughed about why anyone would want any of those doors as they would never fit anything and they were likely to sell them as a lot. After a while, my crafty brain got to ticking and I realized that I could think of a use for those old doors! Once the bidding began, we found ourselves the proud owners of 13 oversized wooden doors. Now we get to load them!
We have a full unfinished basement where we have been storing things but it is a mess! I’d been wanting to build shelves down there for a while, but we always seem to have something else going, not to mention that I didn’t want to spend the money. Buying these doors, got us busy! We built 4 shelves that can hold 24 storage tubs on each one, all out of scrap lumber! All for about $15 (including the price of screws)!
Although they’re not the prettiest, these shelves are some of the sturdiest you will ever see! I don’t mind their looks since it’s in the basement that we only use for storage anyway. I still need to get down and finish organizing them and filling them up!
Have you tried repurposing something from it’s original use to help you in your home?
