Converting Our Garage into Bedrooms

When we moved into this house a few years ago, we never really liked our garage.  It was a dingy, dark place that always ended up a mess.  The floor was partially gravel.  The door didn’t quite shut right and mice could get in from the farmer’s fields that surround our home quite easily.  It wasn’t a very usable space for us.  We never used it to park our cars in, we just used it to store our junk (and some of the junk that the previous owners left for us, lol).

I hadn’t started blogging until after all these pictures were taken.  Amazingly, I can’t find any pictures of the house before the garage door was removed.

Wow, now that is a MESS!  Of course, we’d already started tearing down the old brittle drywall.

Once we found out that we were expecting baby # 6, who was born in June, we decided that we would convert that garage into 2 more bedrooms and a new laundry room.  That would make our home go from a 3 bedroom house to a much needed 5 bedroom.  At the time, the current laundry room was in the kitchen and any time we had excess laundry, it would end up all over the floor in the kitchen.  It was time for an adjustment!  We decided that we would convert the old laundry space into a new pantry for storing our extra food and small appliances which I will share more about soon as it gets finished.

Here are some pictures of the beginning of the process:

Yep, we pulled our trailer into the garage, so we could load it all up with the old drywall.
That was a job and a half!

The floor joists are going in.  My then 11 and 13  year olds put most of their own insulation in.  These rooms are for them!

This is my son’s bedroom, the other side (pictured above) is my daughter’s bedroom.  The only difference is my daughter’s room has 2 windows, although one still needs to be replaced.

This is my daughter painting the laundry room.  After seeing the laundry room this color, my son decided he had to have that color in his room, too.  His room is behind her….but not quite done yet.

I’ve got some of the messiest painter’s alive!  🙂  No, I don’t think he was kissing the wall,
but I’m not exactly sure.

It has been a long process!  We started the project back at the end of March and here it is the end of December and we’re finally moving my 12 year old into her bedroom.  We’re still not done with the whole project, but we’re more than ready to stretch out a little more.

It has been so nice to have extra space, even though it’s not complete yet.  I’m hoping that this change will continue to help us get more organized.  We’ve joked that we need to build an extra room onto our house that has absolutely nothing in it, because that is where all the children congregate!

Very soon, I will show you their rooms with paint, carpet and trim.  My 12 year old has all but moved in, but we still have no doors, light fixtures, window treatments or closet rods.  We do have carpet and paint.  My 12 year old still wants to paint a pink stripe or chevron stripe on her walls, but we have yet to get to that, too.  Time.  It all takes time!  A precious commodity around here seeing that there are 8 mouths to feed and 4 children to school along with a toddler and a baby!  We are thankful for every baby step we can take to get a little closer to getting it all done.  Even if we get it done, I’m sure I can always come up with something else I want to do.

I’m curious about a vapor barrier before putting in the joists for the sub-floor. I’m considering a similar project but wanted to see how yours turned out years later.

Hey Tony…. ours is still fine without the vapor barrier. We had a concrete floor underneath that never really got moisture on it and we haven’t seen anything with moisture since we completed the project. If your garage tends to have moisture, I’d definitely consider it. All in all, it was not that hard of a project and has been a huge blessing to our family through the years. If, my kids would get their rooms clean, I may be able to post an after picture.

Hi! Can you tell me what you guys did where the garage doors were? Did you have to completely replace that side of the building?

Hi Stina… yes, we built a frame out of 2×4’s and made a concrete footing that had bolts that we had pushed into the concrete and constructed our wall from that.

I’m wanting to do the same thing. Did you guys put down a vapor barrier and did you run duck work for heating and air?

The duct work, we did run, but have since discovered it was basically pointless, because our system was not big enough to add on 2 rooms and we didn’t want to replace the whole house system yet. So instead, we use space heaters and window air in the appropriate season and they do well with that. No Vapor Barrier though since it was over concrete and it doesn’t get moist. It’s been several years now and we’ve had no issues with that part.

Sarah, you are very brave and I think it is a wonderful idea. Not only do they get their own rooms but they also have the opportunity to help paint and choose their own colour. These things are so important for young teenagers. Well done.

LOL, yeah, I think they're wearing the rest of the paint, lol. I'll probably show you the next step that is completed this coming week. I just need to get the pictures.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
