Homeschooling with Technology

We all know the power that video can have over our kids.  Why not lasso some of that power and use it to enhance our children’s education?  There’s videos about everything imaginable on You Tube.  If you use them, your teenagers will think you’re really cool and that you actually know a bit about technology, even if you don’t.  Your elementary kids will think you’re really smart….even if you’re not.  🙂

First, let’s talk about the statistics.

  • Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month
  • Over 4 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube
  • 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • 70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
  • YouTube is localized in 53 countries and across 61 languages
  • In 2011, YouTube had more than 1 trillion views or around 140 views for every person on Earth

Personally, I found these statistics a bit shocking.  Until recently, I’ve been living in a slow internet connection world.  I’ve never been fond of waiting to let that video load.  Now that my videos are loading much faster, I’m a lot more excited about the possibilities!

Did you know that there is an educator’s channel on You Tube?  YouTube Teachers has videos separated out by grade and subject.  Each subject is separated into playlists that are grouped together by content.  Even better, they allow you to make your own educational video playlists AND you can search other teachers’ playlists as well.  SCORE!  There are loads of videos separated out by subject matter.  It’s a homeschooling paradise!

You Tube Videos on Organizing & Planning Your Homeschool

There’s many differing ways you can organize your homeschool.  It all depends on your space, style and personality.  Here’s a few ways that stood out to me that are offered on YouTube.

Organizing Your Home School with the Workbox System

Homeschool Math Videos on You Tube

There’s a guy from TabletClass.com and HomeschoolMathQuiz.com who has over 300 videos  on YouTube, just for solving math problems.  Here’s one of them.

How Teaching Textbooks Works

We personally love Teaching Textbooks.  It has cut out the frustration from math time.  I would have wanted to see this video before I purchased my first Teaching Textbooks, just to know how it works.

Science You Tube Videos

Dan Morris from Letters From Dan is a Homeschool Dad who teaches people in the ins and outs of blogging.  He also takes the time to do science experiments with his kids.  Here’s a great example of one you an see, but there are thousands of science experiments on YouTube!

History Videos on You Tube

Untold stories of the Civil War by National Geographic

Gettysburg Address Rap

Just For Fun:

Tim Hawkins is a fellow homeschool dad.  He’s remade a bunch of songs to make fun of different things in life.  Here’s a funny one that we like.

This is obviously just a very small sampling of what is available on You Tube.  You will know what your family wants to learn about the most and will use it to find the perfect videos for YOUR family.

What is your favorite You Tube video for home schooling?

At our house, we use YouTube every day. I have a YouTube channel and recently my kids have been doing videos and we have uploaded them. they are not the best, but it's their first attempts 🙂 I have had a fast connection for a long time now, and it was our one requirement to moving to a new house. We needed a high speed internet. I don't know how I would homeschool without internet.

thanks for sharing the channels you found. When I am looking for something, I always go to YouTube first. 🙂

We're going to start making our own videos more often, too. They think it's great fun!

I would have probably chosen a less political video to demonstrate the funny man.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
