Do You Procrastinate on These Things, too?

As many of you know, I’m a procrastinator at heart.  I’m aiming to get better about this.  Some weeks ARE better and some weeks I wish I could be a little more self motivated!  Below are the tasks that I tend to procrastinate the most often on, in no particular order:

The Art of Keeping Up With Yesterday

  1. Leaving the House – I don’t know why, but I always give myself about 5-10 minutes less than I need to get out the door.  I tend to think that I can move faster than I normally can and I tend to be late.  I have to be extremely intentional and give myself about 20 minutes to get to my destination in order to be on time.
  2. Laundry – Sometimes it gets old doing laundry so often.  I do have plenty of helpers though, so there’s really no excuse for me to get behind on the laundry.
  3. Paying the Bills – It’s a chore that is no fun.  Who wants watch your money go away?  LOL.  I know, it’s a lot better than the late fees and bad credit we’d be getting if I didn’t pay them, so I don’t wait too long…..but…I do wait until the last possible moment.  That reminds me…..I need to pay bills!
  4. Changing the Oil – We change the oil on our car every 3000 miles.  There’s something about going to the oil changing place and waiting for it to get done makes me procrastinate getting it done.  So maybe, I SHOULD say that we desire to change it every 3000 miles, but we’re happy if I get it done by 4,000.
  5. Bible Reading – I’m really good at putting this off.  I’m working on doing better at doing this daily and I’m going to invite you to do the same with me.  Details at the end of the post.
  6. Making Dinner – When I plan to start the crockpot, I tend to remember at 3:00 p.m.  Um, too late!  So then I decide I’ll just wait and make dinner the “old fashioned” way and then remember about 6:30 or 7:00 that I should get started.  Thankfully this is not always the case, but….many days, I’m scrambling trying to figure out what’s for dinner.
  7. Cleaning Put the Van – We have a habit of hopping out of the van and not loading our arms full.  And how in the world do we alway have more things in there than 8 sets of arms can carry anyway?
  8. Cleaning the House – I will do anything I can to not clean the house, BUT I have gotten to the point where I can’t stand it too messy for too long.  What I consider messy and what you consider messy are probably very different though.
  9. Writing a Blog Post – I tend to think I can’t write until the house is quiet.  Um….when is that?  🙂  I’m working through some different suggestions to help me to get it done earlier, one of which included using sound proof ear phones (thanks to my friend April’s suggestion).  I’m not sure if that would drive me crazy though, wearing something so big on my head, but I may try it when I’m desperate enough!  For the record, I wrote this whole post while the house was wide awake and still talking.  Focus, Sarah.  Focus!
  10. Exercise – I don’t really want to do it in front of my gawking children, but I’m getting better.  If they gawk too long, I make them join me.  😉  I’m in the middle of this Shaklee 180 weight loss program and a big part of that is exercising.  I did well with losing weight my first month and now I need to step it up a bit and get regular exercise as often as possible.

Now for the action plan!!

I’m not going to tackle all of these at once, but this week (and the weeks to come), I’m going to tackle my Bible reading (once again).  I aim to post the verse that sticks out to me each day on my Facebook wall.  Maybe you will post yours under mine?  I’d love to hear about what God is teaching you!

For cleaning the house, I’ve also used my new Stop Procrastinating group.  You’re welcome to request an invitation if you’d like to do that, too!  As a group, we work on cleaning our homes and telling each other about how we did.  We aim to keep our homes as clean as possible and support one another in the process.  It’s actually kind of fun!

What about you?  What do you procrastinate on the most?

    Hi Sarah,
i've never commented before on your site & i rarely comment on any other blog site. But your post today really struck a chord with me. i am such a procrastinator that i failed to get the kids' classroom ready for the school year until…well, this week. Yes, that's for this school year. (hanging head in disappointment)

But, that being admitted i would like to catch a wave on my resolve while it's building and begin to STOP procrastinating. i'm going to join the group – thanks for that offer.

Your idea of posting a bible verse from daily devotion time is genius. i can be held accountable and spread God's joy & love to the world at the same time. i'll begin that today.

Finally, the headphones idea; i often tell my children (i have 8 super blessings!) that i am invisible while i am at the computer or on the phone which, of course, they rarely acknowledge or heed. 🙂 Today, though, i am using a visible cue (the headphones) to help them remember that i am not to be interrupted. i probably should set a timer for myself like i do for the kids so that their wait time isn't an open-ended challenge and i don't over-use the privilege of invisibility. Maybe this will help me with my goal to actually begin a blog – a goal i've had for years.

Thank you for sharing, and thank you for allowing us to catch a ride on your wave.
    Blessings!

Hi Tina. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this world of procrastination that I seem to find myself in! Let me know how the headphones trick worked. I hope to see that new blog of yours up and running soon! 🙂

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
