A Natural Heartburn Remedy

My husband has struggled with heartburn ever since I have known him.  He would pop over the counter antacid pills like they were candy in the early years.  Later, while we were in the Army, he would get some prescription antacid’s that were a little heavier duty, but still he would have problems with awaking suddenly in the night with a sudden onset of heartburn.  In fact, it seemed that the more over the counter antacids he would take, the worse he would have the heartburn.

After several years, I started seeing printed materials where they shared that over the counter antacids can have excessive amounts of sodium, aluminum, calcium and magnesium.  Excess aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.    Obviously, that is not a disease that anyone wants to improve their chances of getting, but most people don’t realize they have a healthier and much safer option.
I did a little research and asked my friends and family and found out that the papaya enzyme can help. Of course, you can eat the papaya fruit, but I was thinking that my husband wouldn’t be real excited about that option.  I’m sure he likes papaya, but it’s not something we typically just have on hand.  He needed something that he could take when he started noticing that he was uncomfortable.  Something similar to those pills that he was used to taking.

That’s when I found out that a company called American Health makes a Papaya Enzyme chewable pill.  I ordered it and he skeptically tried it. He was more than willing to give it a try, but I think he had some doubts that it would actually work.  Admittedly, I did, too.  But, amazingly enough, he immediately noticed the results!  It helped him just like his over the counter antacids would.  Great news!  But listen to this:  It actually helped to improve his overall condition!  The more he relied on the papaya enzyme, the less he needed anything to treat it.  He used to take antacids multiple times a day, now he takes it maybe once or twice a week, if that.

Also, for those expectant mothers out there, this is completely safe to take during pregnancy!

Now, I know I sounded a bit like an infomercial, but I’m only sharing this because it is something that has seriously helped our family and I hope that it can help someone else out there!

2 tsp apple cider vinegar with 8 oz water taken every morning has cured my hubby of heartburn. The papaya worries me because isn't the majority of it genetically modified? I would have to look into that. It is a shame how the food companies have ruined real food!

I'm not sure about it being genetically modified. I'm glad to know about the apple cider vinegar trick though. I'll mention it to hubby, too!

So weird…my mom just gave us a bottle of papaya enzyme and I had no idea what it was for. Thank you for educating me so that I might actually use that bottle!!

No, he doesn't take them after every meal. He just takes them as needed. And he often takes more than just 3 when he does need them. He often goes several days between taking them.

oh wow, I hadn't heard about the gluten or dairy intolerance possibility. It's hard for men to think about changing their diet so strictly I think!

I would love to try this as well. I see from the product link you take 3 after meals. Does your husband take three after every meal??

My hubby suffers from this – he doesn't believe me when I tell him that severe heartburn is also indicative of gluten intolerance and even dairy intolerance for some. He's been known to drink baking soda mixed with water and he's now getting Prevacid for free from our insurance carrier – I'd love for him to try this, something natural and better than ingesting baking soda or medication.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
