Over the weekend, I talked with someone who believes that everyone thinks he is worthless. It is so sad to see people like that. They try and try to do the things that they think will please people. When they mess up, someone tells them about it and all of a sudden they start letting that moment define who they are. They don’t even consider that it does not matter what mankind thinks of them. They don’t realize that God is the one who defines who we are and that His love is unconditional. We, as humans, often believe lies about ourselves and the world around us. We must be on guard at all times so that we don’t let those lies take over our lives!
What are some of the lies that we believe?
I don’t matter.
What we believe about ourselves is often what we have been told about ourselves by others. Sometimes it is a learned thing that we were told throughout our childhood. Sometimes, it is what other adults are telling us now. What we’re not remembering, is that the people who are telling us these things or making us feel a certain way are not perfect. They are human. They have sinned, just like you and I have. Why are we letting them define us? My value is defined by God and God alone. He chose you and He chose me to enter into this world and become the persons He wants us to be. Are you seeking to please Him or are you seeking to please man?
I can’t help the way I am.
Do you believe that you are the way you are because of your family genes? Because of who you’re exposed to? Yes, I understand that people do become more like the people that they surround themselves with. But, that does not mean you have no control over the choices you’re making. You can choose to change. Choose to make different choices. You say it’s too hard? Believe me, I know about too hard. I’ve been choosing not to lose weight for years because its too hard. But….we do have a choice! We can choose to break habits. Choose to grasp on to the person God wants us to be. I don’t recommend doing it alone. Grab on to God’s hand and He’ll give you the strength that you need!
Outer beauty is more important than inner beauty.
Isn’t that the way of this world? You’re not thin enough. You don’t have enough make up on. Your hair is too short, too long or just plain weird. You need to have your ears pierced or a necklace on. We are made to feel that we’re not doing ENOUGH to be beautiful. Does it really matter what we look like on the outside? God wants us to take care of our bodies as His temples, but it is not to impress your neighbor. It is to be a living testimony to others. Do you think that God only uses pretty people? I think not. He can use the dirty homeless man to lead someone to Christ, just as well as the beautiful, preppy looking preacher’s wife. Don’t get caught up in keeping up with the crowd. Be concerned about your heart and that it’s in the place that God wants it to be. Beauty will come naturally if it is!
I shouldn’t have to go without the things that I want.
Do you ever feel sorry for yourself if you can’t afford to get something? What if you’re on a diet and shouldn’t eat something you want. Do you let it bother you? Do you think that God feels sorry for you? What about your kids? Do you think that they always need everything they want? No. Of course not. Kids want everything! Do you think that maybe God thinks the same of us? I can hear him now. “Those “kids” want it all, but I know what is important for them”. The truth is, we will always have longings that are not fulfilled this side of heaven! Are you looking to others to fulfill your longings or are you looking straight to God? We must learn to rest in Him and realize that only He knows what is best for us.
I don’t have enough time to do what I need to do.
I feel like this often. I have 6 hungry kids, a messy house, places to go, people to see and a blog to run. The truth is…..I have time to do it all if I am within God’s will. Yes, that may mean that some things that you currently feel are important may suffer, but that’s because God is OK with that. Don’t let anyone put guilt on your for not doing something. Only do the things you know God wants you to do! If we pray and ask Him to direct us in the way we are to go, He will not leave us hanging! After all, in His Word, He says He will not give us more than we can bear! Do you believe that?
I hope this encourages you to step out, grab on to God’s hand and purpose to not believe the lies! He is the only one that matters. Don’t let anyone define who you are but your Maker!

I love your last point! With Christ as our example, we see that he was never overwhelmed, stressed, late, etc. He always did "those things that pleased the Father." So by sitting at his feet and getting our marching orders from the King, we too can be efficient about our Father's business, with no guilt or confusion. So often, though, I charge off into my day without a moment spent in his presence. No wonder I'm stressed out! Lori from Be Not Weary
