I’ve had the materials to make these hair clips for a couple months, but I kept putting it off. The other night, when I made those t-shirt flowers, I had tried to make these first. That was a flop! I had bought some fabric glue that didn’t work so well! I ended up with some sticky ribbon and sticky fingers but nothing was sticking well enough to call it success.
Instead of the fabric glue, I pulled out the hot glue gun. That worked like a charm! Here’s what you need to make some of your own.
Supplies:
- Package of hair clips (We bought ours at Michaels, but you can also order them on Amazon in bulk for way cheaper!)
- Ribbon in your favorite colors
- hot glue gun
- scissors
Instructions:
First, you take the ribbon, starting with the inside of the clip and glue it down, wrapping it around back to the outside. You’ll start with the clip open and end with the clip open. You’re covering the whole clip. The inside bottom, to the back, around the pincher (with a dab of glue on each handle), back around to the outside front and ending on the inside again.
You can leave it like this if you like. This is plenty cute in a little girl’s hair and you can make so many different colors that you can be color coordinated with lots of outfits. Of course, you can also dress it up a little more.
Here’s one way.
Make a circle of ribbon and glue it together in the middle like this:
Put this on top of your hair clip. Then you take another much smaller piece and wrap it around the ribbon circle.
and then glue it on the inside of the clip.
Let the glue dry and Tada….a cute hair bow! Super easy, too!
and I’ve got a super cute model to show me how nice it looks!
You should have seen her a few days ago. She hit her face on the coffee table at my sister’s house while I was away at the homeschool conference and it was all swollen up. We thought she was going to lose a tooth…but thankfully, she’s all better now!
Have you ever made your own hair bows?

If you’d like another way to embellish them, don’t forget about how to make flowers out of t-shirt strips.
