Today, we went to our monthly girls club called Bright Lights. It is for a few girls in our homeschool group that are between the ages of 9 and 12. We are teaching the girls to be strong for the Lord in their youth by focusing on Biblical principles and spending time in the Bible and in prayer, as well as being accountable to one another. Bright is an acronym for:
Being
Radiant
In
Godliness
Holiness &
Testimony
Each time we get together, we do a craft of some kind. The first time we did cake decorating, the 2nd time, they learned to knit with their circle looms. This time, they learned how to make these adorable little hair bows. They go well on headbands, purses, a scarf or even as a pin on your shirt, too. They’re so cute and easy to make!
Supplies:
Fabric – satin (can use cotton if you use iron on interfacing to make the fabric stiffer)
Hot Glue Gun
Candle & matches
Button
Needle/Thread
Felt
hair clips – (I bought mine at Michael’s, they are called Snap Clips)
Directions:
Cut five circles out of your satin (or other fabric) of slightly varying sizes. You could start by tracing a glass and get a little smaller each time so that they nicely stack on one another. Our biggest circle is 3.5 inches across and our smallest is 2 inches across. You need a total of 5 circles. Cut into each circle, going around the whole thing to make your petals. Leave about a 1/2″ to 3/4″ space between each one.
Once all 5 circles have been cut into to form the petals, you will want to lightly burn the edges, by sticking your fabric very close to the candle heat and let it slightly melt and curl up. Keep a glass of water nearby in case it catches, so you can quickly put it out. Of course, just blowing on it will work in most cases. Go around each circle until all of the petals are slightly curled and blackened.
Stack your 5 circles on top of one another and position a button in the middle. Sew the button on where you want it.
Cut a small circle of felt (about 1.5″ across) and a small rectangle (about 1.75″ by .75″) out of your felt. Hot glue the circle onto the back. Then glue down the short ends of the rectangle to form a loop in which you can slide your clip into. Some people choose to glue their clip down, but others choose to not attach it with glue so that they can use the flower on other things.
