10 Reasons to Find Routine in Your Homeschool

Routine.  Something I struggle with.  I do have a routine, but I don’t always follow it to the T.  I like to get up, lay around, check my email and waste the morning away.  I am not a morning person!  I could stay up until 2:00 a.m. every night!  In the school year, that doesn’t work so well.  Thankfully we take summers off so that I can do that every now and then!  Because, my body wants me to be lazy in the mornings, I try to follow a bit of a routine.  Does it work each and every day?  No….but it’s getting easier as time rolls on.  It is definitely something I’ll continue to focus on this next school year!  I have a secret, messed up (for me) dream of wanting to make a schedule in 15 minute blocks.  It’s not a good plan for me, because I am way too spontaneous.  Routine fits me way better!

  1. We can keep our homeschool’s focus on God and what He wants us to learn.
  2. We will actually accomplish most of what we set out to do if we have a bit of order to our day.
  3. We can take time for field trips.
  4. The house will not fall apart too quickly as we’ll have a routine in place to keep it under control.   (we need more work on this one…chore cards need to be revamped I think!)
  5. You can take time for fun projects, like science experiments, fun crafts and silly read alouds.
  6. You won’t have to worry that the kids aren’t getting the best education that they can get, as you’ll be getting school done in regular intervals.
  7. You’ll have dinner planned and ready at a decent time, making the rest of your life flow. (for more ideas on that check out my Freezer to Slow Cooker section of the blog)
  8. It makes your school time go faster, since you know what you’re doing and the kids know what to expect.
  9. It helps your children become more independent.  When they’re more independent, they “own” their education and see learning as part of their every day life, not as something they have to do.
  10. It helps when juggling little ones on top of your Homeschooling demands.

Today’s post is part of the 10 in 10 series that I’m participating in with the iHomeschool Network.  I’m also linking up with Many Little Blessings, Tuesday Top 10.

I am not a scheduled person, and am continuously fighting the need to have one. I am forcing myself to improve on this, and am already seeing a huge difference in the children. Come to find out, kids actually feel secure with more of a schedule!

I'm with you…forcing myself to improve! Kids do well with it, I know.

    I have a love/hate relationship with routine. 😉
I love it, I hate having to reinforce it. =p But I know it's what's best for us. We work so much better when we stick to a routine. Thanks for sharing your reasons! They're all "on the spot," I can't argue with any of them. =)

This is a useful reminder as I'm about to put next year's schedule together-thank you.

I, too, have found that block scheduling is too difficult to follow. We implement a rhythm to our day (things that need to get done overall) but I let the routine flow naturally. great post.

Thank you so much! As a special needs mommy these recipes have helped us so much.   I often am very busy with being a nurse for our child that I don't have time for making sure we get meals.  This allows me to do all my prep on the weekends, while my husband is home to help, and to cook during the week.  So grateful!

Sarah’s Freezer to Slow Cooker ebooks have been a fantastic addition to my meal plans.  They make meal planning easy and my family happy. I love the way each recipe is laid out, with a shopping list and ingredient prep list, along with cooking instructions. Sarah’s done all the hard work for me!  The recipes have used have all been delicious and easily adaptable to my family’s taste and the number of people I’m serving.

I purchased all of your freezer to slow cooker ebooks a month or so ago and I'm in love with this way of cooking.  I now have taken all 10 weeks of recipes and written them of my menu planner and then I repeated the 10 weeks and will continue to do so throughout the year.  My family of 5 adults and 1 child enjoy the meals that you have planned and I have cooked and I'm excited that the next time when that meal comes due up in the rotation I won't have to purchase anything but just pull it from the freezer.  Thank you so much

This makes my life so much easier. I'm a busy work at home/stay at home mom, wife, business woman and I feel like dinner is always the thing I just never get time to do. We have done like 15 of the crockpot recipes from Sarah and they are all very yummy. They get a thumbs up from my husband and kids every time. And there is always enough for my husband to take the left overs at least 2x per recipe. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 21, 13, 16. So it makes plenty. Thank you Sarah.

I am a 59-year-old wife and mother of two grown children.  I love your idea of fixing a lot of meals ahead of time and then pulling one out, put it in the crockpot, and you have dinner when you get home.  I hate feeling rushed when I cook so Monday - Friday I use those crockpot meals and make enough that we have lunch the next day.  I take Sunday afternoon, fix up what I need for the week (I don't have a lot of freezer space so I do a week's worth at a time) and I'm done with it!  Saturdays I like to try new recipes from some of my cookbooks which I am finding I can freeze as well!  So you have shown me a whole new way to organize my time and still put a healthy meal on the table.  Thanks so much and I look forward to future blogs.
