It is so fun to see how children are able to entertain themselves without the use of conventional toys! As I’ve watched my children come up with new ways to play, I had to take note of their newest creation. Here is a silly tutorial! 🙂
Yesterday, they found a pack of balloons around the house that we had bought for someone’s birthday and forgot to use them…..yeah, oops! Next thing I knew, they had turned them into a little baby. They used one long balloon and 2 smaller circular ones.
The long one was twisted in the middle to make the 2 arms.
Then the head was attached going up, and the body going down (legless body, mind you). Draw a face on and hair if you like and wala…..your own homemade baby doll. Next thing I knew, they were pulling out the baby’s clothes and my 2 year old’s clothes and dressing them. Why are these more entertaining than their regular baby dolls? I have no idea, but they’re cute!
Next, they found an old handheld tape recorder to record their voices and other people’s voices. I had bought it at a rummage sale for a quarter thinking they’d enjoy it and they never tried it out, probably because I was sidetracked and forgot to buy them batteries for it. Finally, they found it again, we happened to have some batteries on hand and they have had great fun recording themselves and playing their voices in slow motion and fast. They sang the Chipmunk Christmas song and were impressed that they sounded so much like the REAL chipmunks! It IS pretty comical!
They’ve also been known to build a HUGE tower out of our old VHS movies. Yes, I still have old VHS movies. I’m weird like that! (this is an old picture….but i found a tower in my room recently)
Sometimes, they will line up the dining room chairs while they’re watching a movie and pretend like it’s a car…so that they’re at the drive in movie. They even put the baby’s Bumbo seat in one of the chairs for the 2 year old to have a “car seat” to sit in. It’s pretty funny!
I love being the mom of many children! It’s fun to see their creative juices start flowing as they turn things intended for one purpose, to be used for a totally different purpose.
What creative things do your children do without “toys” to entertain themselves?
