Removing Gum – How to Get Gum Out of Clothes

What do you do when it’s time to eat but aren’t ready to quit chewing your gum yet?  Why….put it in your pocket, of course!  At least that’s what my 3 year old decided was the best thing to do.  She said, “I didn’t know it would stick!!” and then proceeded to be very grumpy about the fact that her pocket was sticking together.  I assured her that mommy would figure out what to do.  So, she stripped off her shorts and left them in the hands of her mommy who can do anything (at least in her eyes….much unlike those Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything!).

Removing Gum

I knew that you could remove it from hair with peanut butter, so I wondered if that would get gum out of clothes, too.  After doing a little bit of internet research, I discovered that in most cases it really does work on clothes, too.

Get Gum off of Clothing

First, scrape as much gum off as you can with a butter knife.

Remove Gum From Fabric

You can see how it’s there, but not nearly as thick.

Second, rub in the peanut butter.

Third, Rub it in really good and remove all the gum in the process.

Fourth, Rinse it out to see if you got it all.  If not, do it again.

Fifth, Wash as usual.

We didn’t quite get to step 5, but we were successful!  It was very easy!

My 10 year old was watching me as I pulled this post together.  I asked her if I could borrow her pack of gum for the picture and she was so confused.  She thought I was going to recreate the whole thing by sticking gum to fabric.  LOL.  I guess she missed the part about her sister putting gum in her pocket.

What different things have you used to get gum out of clothing or other surfaces?

    great tutorial, Sarah!

I have also had some success with an ice cube. Last week, in fact, when 6yo dd had gum stuck in her hair.

How do you use the ice cube?

You rub it on there. It hardens the gum and makes it easier to get it off.

Is there a way to get it out of your husbands white dress shirt??? I'm worried the peanut butter will stain his nice shirt. (Especially since the shirt has only been worn a few times)

Have you tried using ice? I've heard that works well!

Oh yeah, and the gum is in the shirt pocket smashed in the corner… (it went through the washer and dryer before we noticed. Not cool!)
