I first learned of Creating a Masterpiece last year at the Kansas City Homeschool Conference. I was amazed by the claims that children could master these amazing pieces of art. They were even able to accomplish them with little to no instruction from their parents.
Teaching Art has Always Scared Me!
You see, I am not an artist. The biggest thing I remember from art class in Middle School was learning how to mix colors. I thought it was so cool that you could get green from mixing yellow and blue. My drawing and painting skills? They stunk! I can barely draw a straight line and I do not naturally see all the lines that artists tend to see when sketching something. Teaching art to my children has always been a daunting, scary task to take on. That is, until I found Creating a Masterpiece!
How Did Creating a Masterpiece Start?
Sharon Hofer was a homeschool mom who found herself teaching the local homeschooled children art lessons. As classes filled up and she had to turn children away from her classes, she decided to start putting them on DVD where she could offer them to ALL homeschooled children who want to learn. I am so thankful that she did!
Why We Love Creating a Masterpiece
- All of the instruction is done on a DVD by artist, Sharon Hofer.
- She teaches in an easy to understand way that all ages can decipher, (even this old art flunkie).
- They let you know which supplies you will need on the back of each DVD.
- There are many different art mediums to choose from, thus giving your children a well rounded art education.
- There are many different levels of art to choose from as well. You can begin with Easy and work your way up to harder choices.
- You can do these for all levels of children. I haven’t had my younger kids do it yet, but I’m super excited to know that they can and will be using these soon!
Our First DVD Experience
For the first DVD, we tried the “Caribbean Lighthouse, Lessons in Acrylic Painting”. We have a smaller child’s easel that has been stored in our basement for a while. We brought it up and let Autumn, 13 years old, try it out while watching Sharon on the laptop.
Autumn dug right in putting the acrylic paints onto a plate so she could get going.
[One thing I noticed is that my daughter tends to put too much paint on her paint pallate. Even though Mrs. Hofer emphasizes not to do that because you can always add more, you may think about directing your children in person as well. That way you don’t have a bunch of wasted paint!]
We were amazed at how well she was catching on! After a few hours of hard work over several days, this is her finished product.
What is My Daughter Saying?
My 13 year old daughter, Autumn, has always loved art. She took her finished product over to show her grandparents and her grandfather exclaimed, “I don’t think I could do that good”. She says, “I didn’t either, but the teacher on the DVD made it easy!”. That sums it all up right there, folks. Any time you can supplement your homeschool AND have great results AND have fun doing it, it’s a win-win situation. Here she is holding her finished product:
(Even though 1/2 of her face still looks a little bit paralyzed in this picture, I’m super happy to report that she’s improving since the last time her picture was on my blog!)
