It’s vacation season and time for families to start travelling. We are a family of 8 and travelling with such a large group can get expensive if you’re not careful! When we decide to take a trip, we have to get creative in order to keep our expenses down. One way we do that is by figuring out ways to eat cheap. While your family may not be as big as mine, you can still use these ideas to save money while you’re on the road.

Pack drinks & snacks

We have found that we spend a whole lot less money when we pack a bag of fruit, some crackers and a case of water in the car. You have no need to stop at the expensive convenience store to buy food if you already have it in your car. In addition to just snacks, you could also pack full meals, like sandwiches and/or wraps if you know you’ll be travelling around meal time.

Utilize Dollar menus

Often, when we know that we will be gone for 2 meals, we will opt to find a fast food restaurant that has a $1 menu. While it’s tempting to buy the more expensive fare, you can be plenty satisfied for much less money. Sometimes, we’ll allow each person in the car to pick one item off of the dollar menu (like a sandwich) and then buy a bag of chips to supplement that meal. It’s a whole lot cheaper than buying each person their own sides to go with it.

Use Coupons

We have found that many restaurants have coupons that they email to their subscribers. They also may have printable coupons that you can print without subscribing. Before a trip, I take the time to research the restaurants that are in the area we will be travelling. If they have an email club, I sign up for it, getting many different coupons by email. If it’s your birthday near the travel date, you’ll get loads of free meals. You can also buy The Entertainment book to find area specific coupons.

Kids Eat Free or discounted

Many restaurants offer Kids Eat Free deals with the purchase of an adult entree. In order to find out which restaurants in your area will be offering this, go to Google and do a search that says “Kids Eat Free [your town, state]“. You will likely find a place to eat each day of the week if you’re planning to be in a larger town. If you’re only planning to be in a smaller town, there still may be some chains that do offer this. You may want to do a search for your state instead, to get an idea of which chains do offer this, that way you’ll be well educated while you’re travelling.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables!

If you’re travelling and suddenly you start feeling weak, tired and grumpy, consider that maybe you’re not getting enough fruit and vegetables. Probably not enough water either. There are lots of restaurants that sell side salads on their dollar menu. Believe me, it’s worth it! Your body is craving the nutrients in order to be happy and healthy.

Split a Meal

Many restaurants put way too much food on your plate. Consider saving money by sharing a meal with your spouse and/or kids. You still get plenty to eat but for half the price!

Now it’s your turn. How does your family save money on food while you’re travelling?

Today, while in the city for my daughter’s pediatric neurologist appointment, I had some free time to go by the book store. I rarely get to go into a book store and browse the books because I usually have little people alongside of me who are busily trying to wreak havoc on all of the shelving! This time, it was just the two of us, so we took some time to just browse.

While I was in there, I realized that I do not read to my kids very much any more. We got to that busy season in our lives and that was one of the first things to go. As we were walking around, browsing all of the books that I thought they’d enjoy, I made a mental decision that we are going to be reading together this summer!

While I could have gone around and made a large book list there at the store, I still have plenty of GREAT books here at our house that we have not read yet. I think I’ll start here and the move elsewhere. Besides, I was having a hard time actually purchasing something without reading the review on it. My how we rely on the internet these days!

10 Books I Hope to Read Aloud This Summer

As you can see many of them have been through abuse, but thankfully they’re still readable! I’m trying to choose something that even the 4 year old would sit through. A couple of them, she may have problems with and on those days, I’ll have her pick out a shorter book to be reading!

I know a lot of you who follow me on Facebook already know all about my new website. I’m sorry if this is repeat information for you, BUT….I wanted to let the rest of you know all about my new project.

Our family has been going through some turbulent times here lately in the “healthy family” department. One daughter was sent by helicopter to a larger city hospital in November for respiratory distress related to pneumonia; another daughter had a mastoidectomy (removal of part of the bone behind the ear) to remove a cyst that was causing half of her face to be paralyzed in April; and yet another daughter who has epilepsy and has been struggling with getting her seizures under control. Yes, to say we’ve been through some struggles lately is an understatement. But, I’ve found that we’re not alone. Many other families are struggling as well!

I’ve found that in my life, we tend to go through seasons of trials. Each time we do, I try to focus on how we can grow through the situation. I try to really focus on seeing where God is working in our lives. I want to see God’s Provision. I want to see His faithfulness. I want to cling to Him through the rough patches.

Introducing, Homeschool Survival!

That is why Homeschool Survival came into existence. Homeschool Survival began in order to give others hope in their hard times. I want to show others that they’re not alone and that God will provide even when things seem hopeless. I want it to be a blessing to the hurting. Because of this, I’m always looking for new stories from other homeschoolers. You don’t have to be a writer or a blogger or any of that. Just tell your story. Share how you were in a hard time, but you’re not there any more. If you’re not feeling brave enough to do it on your own, let me interview you. The stories need to be told. They need to be heard. We need to share a message of hope. We need to hold each other up and to pray for one another. I hope you’ll join me! If you have a story to tell, please email me at homeschoolsurvival@gmail.com

Visit the site for Freebies and Giveaways!

This week, I’ve got loads of freebies and giveaways going on at Homeschool Survival. I know you saw the list of giveaways in yesterday’s post, but if you’re interested in the freebies (like e-book, Vision Forum Cd, Brinkman Adventures Audio Drama, 3 month membership to List PlanIt and lots more), go to: Freebies for You!

I know, I rarely talk about music here on Sidetracked Sarah, but I have some friends that I’d love to tell you about. I would be thrilled to see this band go viral on Christian radio and I’m hoping you all will help us out with that! Not only do they have Christian music, but they also sing

Introducing The Colton & Zara Band

This band is unique in that every member of the band besides the drummer are related to one another, at least by marriage. You’ve got Colton & Zara who are the lead singers and are married. Then there’s Stevie & Darren who are married. Stevie is Colton’s sister. Then, Dustin who is Stevie & Colton’s brother. The only person who’s not a literal part of the family is the drummer Matt (not pictured) but he fits right in with the rest of them!

I’m lucky. I get to see them every week at church. When they’re not on tour, they lead my kids’ youth group’s song service on Wednesday nights. They’re great role models for the teens in the church and are always more than willing to serve others. I also think they’re pretty cool because most of the members of the band were homeschooled. Since I’ve been homeschooling for over 11 years now, I find it pretty neat when I find some young previously homeschooled enthusiasts looking to impact the world with their talents. In fact, currently Colton & Zara are on a mission trip to Honduras!

Because of my love for the family and my love for the music, I decided that you all must meet them!

About The Colton & Zara Band

Is “Happy Pop Rock” even a musical genre? The Colton and Zara Band says it is—and proves it.

The Colton and Zara Band began when childhood friends Colton and Zara were playing around a campfire with songs Zara had written, right after their former band had parted ways. The band had been invited to play a showcase in Nashville, and though Colton and Zara were in college to become veterinarians, they decided to give the showcase a try, for fun, with the new songs.

Three months later, the duo was signed to a label, preparing for their first tour to the west coast in 2009, and finishing up their first album, Whimsical Dreams– a light, airy, and melodic acoustic album. After seeing success in the West Coast coffee houses and restaurants, and on a winter tour in the northern states following soon after, the duo expanded into a band as Stevie and Dustin Davy, and bassist Darren Schrag, filled the stage.

This growth brought forth the band’s second album in 2010, My Favorite Day, stepping up not only the amount of songs, but also the content, and the fun, upbeat melodies, along with more serious songs such as “Librarian” and hidden track, “White Bird”. This album also featured their most successful song, “The Cupcake Song”, with its bouncy, light, and altogether fun beat, winning the hearts—and dance moves—of many.

In the recent past, The Colton and Zara Band (now under a label out of Nashville), have toured the east coast, and they now prepare to sweep their happy-upbeat folk pop beats across the west coast a third time in Summer of 2012.

The band, as a whole, loves people. They love to make friends, and bring joy to those they meet, those they play for, and those they play music with. They also are easily entertained, losing themselves in laughter day in and day out.

More importantly, though, they love life, and strive to hold fast to their purpose for life, and to share that purpose and focus with those they come into contact with. Their goal is to make a difference in the world, and their music — and lives — show it.

What Can You DO?

Listen to the music and see if it’s something you like. If so, tell someone about them! Share about them on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. Wouldn’t it be cool if we were able to help them gain in popularity?

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are 100% my own.

I first learned of Creating a Masterpiece last year at the Kansas City Homeschool Conference. I was amazed by the claims that children could master these amazing pieces of art. They were even able to accomplish them with little to no instruction from their parents.

Teaching Art has Always Scared Me!

You see, I am not an artist. The biggest thing I remember from art class in Middle School was learning how to mix colors. I thought it was so cool that you could get green from mixing yellow and blue. My drawing and painting skills? They stunk! I can barely draw a straight line and I do not naturally see all the lines that artists tend to see when sketching something. Teaching art to my children has always been a daunting, scary task to take on. That is, until I found Creating a Masterpiece!

How Did Creating a Masterpiece Start?

Sharon Hofer was a homeschool mom who found herself teaching the local homeschooled children art lessons. As classes filled up and she had to turn children away from her classes, she decided to start putting them on DVD where she could offer them to ALL homeschooled children who want to learn. I am so thankful that she did!

Why We Love Creating a Masterpiece

All of the instruction is done on a DVD by artist, Sharon Hofer.

She teaches in an easy to understand way that all ages can decipher, (even this old art flunkie).

They let you know which supplies you will need on the back of each DVD.

There are many different art mediums to choose from, thus giving your children a well rounded art education.

There are many different levels of art to choose from as well. You can begin with Easy and work your way up to harder choices.

You can do these for all levels of children. I haven’t had my younger kids do it yet, but I’m super excited to know that they can and will be using these soon!

Our First DVD Experience

For the first DVD, we tried the “Caribbean Lighthouse, Lessons in Acrylic Painting”. We have a smaller child’s easel that has been stored in our basement for a while. We brought it up and let Autumn, 13 years old, try it out while watching Sharon on the laptop.

Autumn dug right in putting the acrylic paints onto a plate so she could get going.

[One thing I noticed is that my daughter tends to put too much paint on her paint pallate. Even though Mrs. Hofer emphasizes not to do that because you can always add more, you may think about directing your children in person as well. That way you don't have a bunch of wasted paint!]

We were amazed at how well she was catching on! After a few hours of hard work over several days, this is her finished product.

What is My Daughter Saying?

My 13 year old daughter, Autumn, has always loved art. She took her finished product over to show her grandparents and her grandfather exclaimed, “I don’t think I could do that good”. She says, “I didn’t either, but the teacher on the DVD made it easy!”. That sums it all up right there, folks. Any time you can supplement your homeschool AND have great results AND have fun doing it, it’s a win-win situation. Here she is holding her finished product:

(Even though 1/2 of her face still looks a little bit paralyzed in this picture, I’m super happy to report that she’s improving since the last time her picture was on my blog!)

Buy It

You can buy this and many other DVD’s at Creating a Masterpiece. You can buy just the DVD, a set of DVD’s or a DVD along with the art supplies (on select DVD’s) you will be needing from Creating a Masterpiece.

Educating the WholeHearted Child, published by Apologia is a precious book for homeschoolers written by Clay and Sally Clarkson. I have owned an early version of this book for many years. It is the book that I turn to any time I need to refocus or to make myself feel better about how our school year is going.

This is my old tattered version of the book. If you’ve been in the homeschooling circles for a while, you may remember seeing it.

And here is the nice, new updated version of the book! I love the new cover! This one will be given away!

In the new version, they updated the reading lists to include a more recent booklist to include books that have been printed within the past several years.

How Will Educating the WholeHearted Child Help Me?

Not only does this book encourage your children to become “WholeHearted”, but it also encourages you to parent and educate your children with your whole heart! The authors encourage you to focus on Christ in your home first, as it is the most important thing in life to teach your children! Using His Word as your first curriculum to turn to!

Christian activities and interests do not make a home Christian. A Christian home is never defined by what the children are doing; it is defined by what the parents are doing.

Educating a WholeHearted Child, Chapter 1

It walks you through how to shepherd your child’s spirit to yearn for God, helping them to become sensitive to know God throughout every situation they encounter in life.

It encourages you to disciple your children, helping them to know what it means to live for God.

It helps you to figure out why you’re homeschooling and educates you on the many differences in the way that school can be taught.

It gives you many real life examples of how these teaching ideas have worked in the Clarkson home.

It has many Scriptural references and examples to back up what they teach.

It educates you on how to make your home an environment that induces learning.

It teaches you what makes a good book and what types of books to avoid in your home education.

It helps you understand both the benefit and the harm of technology in the homeschool.

It assists you with more easily making decisions on what curriculum you should purchase, based on questions you should ask yourself when considering curriculum.

It walks you through the different personalities in our children and how each personality learns differently.

It urges you to become a student of your children, getting to know them well and following in their interests when considering what to study in your homeschool.

It presents you with the tools necessary to “Keep the Family Vision Alive”.

It offers you lots of great ideas on how to get your family’s home and homeschool organized, using unconventional, inexpensive organizing tools to make it a little easier!

This book is so full of helpful tidbits, I keep it on my shelf as a resource to pull out when I’m struggling in a particular area of my homeschool life. In fact, if you could only buy one book to encourage the homeschool mom, I would highly recommend that you make this one YOUR choice. It’s that good!

Homeschooling a Large Family: What I’ve Learned About Myself

1. I will never get it all done - It’s true. Getting it all done is a myth. What is “it all” anyway? There are days that I feel like superwoman and that I can actually get EVERYTHING done on my list, but normally, I stick to the more important things on the list and work from there. If I don’t get it all done one day, I move it to the next. I try not to make myself guilty over that. Mothering 6 children is a big job!

2. I will always have to feed them! - Kids are hungry all. day. long. At least my kid are! The trick to making those “I’m hungry” moments go smoother is to keep regular snack foods on hand. Keep a dinner plan available at your fingertips and try keeping an easy meal on hand at all times. My favorite easy meals to keep the ingredients available for are my 6 in 1 Easy Mexican Meals.

3. It’s OK to be a night owl. Sometimes, I don’t get a chance to think very thoroughly during the day, so I stay up late to do my thinking. My blogging happens at night as well. Any planning I do, happens at night. Many of you would croak to know that I often stay up until 2:00 a.m. I try not to do this every night, but many days I get so much done by doing this!

4. I’m no clean freak! My house explodes every day! No, not literally explodes. I’m talking about the mess that a household of 6 children can leave behind. It is amazing to me how quickly a house can fall apart. What’s equally amazing is how fast 5 children and a toddler can pick things back up! I have learned to use my children often in order to keep the house in a workable enough mode. Is it perfect? No way. Some days are way better than others. We’re definitely a work in progress at all times!

5. I enjoy getting to be there for my kids throughout the day. I remember when my oldest was a baby and how I had to go off to work and leave him for the day. Most of the time, my mom or my husband’s mom helped to watch him, but it still felt so wrong to be leaving him. I ached to be by his side, caring for his every need. I was able to fulfill that dream before my 2nd child was born. I’ve been a stay at home, homeschooling mommy ever since. I’m so thankful that I’ve been able to be there for their many moments. First words, first steps, first ride on a bike, learning to read, learning to add and subtract. It’s been fun. Yes, it can be mentally taxing, but it’s so worth it!

6. I have a hard time actually homeschooling when I’m never home. Some weeks are rough! It feels like we go from appointment to appointment, or activity to activity. Those busy weeks, we often slack in school. I found that in order to get enough school done, we have to stay home as much as possible, keeping our activities during the day to a minimum. Some weeks I’m more successful at this than others. Those weeks where we don’t have anything scheduled, are my most successful weeks!

7. I have to choose what’s really important. Is it more important to have a clean bedroom? or to make a memory together? Is it more important to begin your day with math or to begin with a Biblical foundation? Choosing something better is something that I constantly have to remind myself to do. Sometimes I make things important that just aren’t. I have to constantly evaluate my day and my responses to life’s circumstances to see if I’m in the right mindset. If I’m getting angry too quickly or feeling rushed and stressed all the time, then I’m making a choice that I shouldn’t be making.

8. I’m not very good at listening to 4 kids talk at once! It’s funny. In large families, every person gets this great idea to tell mom about all at once! Sometimes they all just start talking and think that I can hear them all. Sometimes this totally stresses me out, other times, I find it hilarious. ”One at a time” has been known to come out of my mouth many times a week! On the plus side, I’m so glad that they like to tell me their thoughts. We are close. Sometimes I get bored of hearing every single detail about the baseball game but I’d rather it be that way than having a child that didn’t talk to me at all.

9. If I don’t take the time to exercise before anything else, it won’t get done. Exercise is a hard thing to get to. Especially when all eyes are on mom who is standing in front of the TV doing weird movements with her arms and legs. I made one rule, that I don’t always stick to, but it works when I need it. If you start staring, you’re joining me! When I start my day with exercise, I tend to get more done in that day, than when I don’t. When I don’t start my day with exercise, I often won’t do it at all for the day.

10. I am very forgetful. I call it brain overload! I use lots of things to keep me from forgetting things. Evernote, pen and paper, Windows Notes, I-pad calender. If I don’t write it down or type it in, I will forget it.

Hello friends. Another month has already gone by and I’m still here on the Shaklee 180 program. This past month was a tough one. I did a lot of travelling for doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, homeschool conferences and even a trip to Branson for a prolonged field trip with the kiddos and their cousins. I found that I don’t do very well staying on the program when I’m in the car so much. I need something to keep my awake. I do not like coffee and I don’t like diet soda, either. I’m not even a very big fan of tea. I should probably try to change that so that I can get my caffeine fix while I’m travelling!

To say that my motivation was suffering is a bit of an underestimate! It was suffering, but I still managed to lose a little. You’ll have to watch the video to find out just how much.

So, come on, cheer me on and maybe join in with me! Exercise, exercise, exercise! Let me know how you’re doing!

I’m going to try and post about how I’m doing a little more frequently than I have been. More to keep myself accountable than anything!
