Have you ever just had one of those days? You know the kind. Everything you touch or do goes wrong. The kids are misbehaving and you keep trying to accomplish something but nothing works. Oh and then there’s the one kid who must not have slept very well, because he or she (or both of them) keep crying. All. Day. Long. This was me, yesterday.
In fact, there’s a little more to my story. A week and a half ago, I spent 3 hours preparing and assembling a month’s worth of crockpot freezer meals. I had sent my girls out to the refrigerator’s freezer in our extra building to store them, as my freezer in the house was getting really full. The next day, my husband found a bag of rotting food, sitting right in front of the refrigerator. I had also sent some other food out there, in a bag. Without looking at the bag for myself, I assumed that the rotting food was the overflow items that had been in the bag. While I wasn’t thrilled about it, a lot of the food in that bag was old and I really wasn’t going to miss it too badly. The thought never crossed my mind that it could be our meals!
Fast forward to today. I went out to pick our day’s dinner. I was shocked to see that we were missing 5 or 6 of our meals that I had prepared. Beef Tips and Gravy was in there. In fact, I had doubled that recipe. It was my husband’s favorites and had one of the most expensive cuts of meat, too. I was livid to think that my hard work had gone to such total waste, not to mention all the money in food that was wasted. I came inside complaining to “Not Me” about how they wasted my food and hard work and I can’t believe that they left it out to rot. I mean, why in the world would someone set down a bag in front of the freezer without putting it inside?
In addition to the rotting food discovery, I had a few other things happen throughout the day.
- I got an email that something I sold for $200 was not actually sold like I thought it was, so I’d be without that money.
- When I went to the store, I scratched my own van with my shopping cart. Not just a little knick. A long, scrape the paint off kind of scratch.
- I found moths in my pantry.
- I was reminded about an appointment in a town 2 hours away, that was happening the next day and I was not prepared to go.
- I burned the baby with a hot plate. (thankfully it wasn’t that bad, but at first I wasn’t sure)
- Then there was the sad 5 and 3 year olds who kept throwing fits and crying and fighting all day long. Literally. All Day.
- The dog is sick and needs to go to the vet and I’m worried he’s not going to make it
I’m not telling you all of this to make you feel sorry for me. I just wanted to point out that some days are downright bad. Sometimes, it’s how we respond to these struggles that helps us to set the tone of the rest of our day.
Do you yell? (I did)
Did it help? (Nope)
Do you pray? (I did)
Did it help? (YES!)
Do you try to focus on the positive? (It can be hard, can’t it?)
Do you quote Scripture? (It sure helps you focus on the positive!)
Sometimes, you just have to sit back, take a deep breath, grab a treat or a Sonic drink, take a nap….. Do something to get your mind going in a different direction. After all……
We don’t want to miss out on those happy moments! Your kids are only this age once! You are able to shape the out come of your day in the way you respond. No, that doesn’t mean that nothing bad will ever happen, but sometimes something unexpected happens…….
P.S. When my husband came home, we found the food in the deep freezer. I had told the kids to put it in the other one and it didn’t even dawn on me to check in the deep freeze. So, the one thing that started my day bad, ended up to not be a bad thing at all. Sometimes, all we need is a little perspective!
