A couple of weeks ago, we went on our first camping trip of 2014, together as a family. It was a church camping trip and the kids, of course, had a great time! It’s so much fun for them when their friends from church are camping with them, too!
For mom, getting ready for camping is kind of a big deal! Let’s see. A popup camper. Food for 9 people. Sleeping bags for 8. Clothes for us all. Diapers, sunscreen. Food. Food. Did I say Food? Everybody keeps wanting to eat…go figure!
I’m definitely not one of those people who gets any enjoyment out of cooking while camping. It just seems like work. (Oh wait, it IS work!) I like to go camping to relax and not HAVE to do anything. So…this time, I decided that I should plan ahead a little. The morning we were planning to go camping, I put together some tin foil food packets. I’ve heard about people throwing these in a campfire but since I wasn’t going to be there until closer to dinner time, I thought I’d just put mine in the slow cooker instead. I figured if they weren’t cooked enough when we got there, we could always throw it into the campfire.
We always get an electric camping site for our popup camper, so we just brought our 2 crockpots with us to the campsite, to continue the cooking.
Hobo Dinner Slow Cooker Packet
Ingredients:
- Ground Beef
- Salt and Pepper
- Onion
- Potatoes
- Baby Carrots
- Worcestershire Sauce (optional)
- Aluminum Foil
Directions:
Lay out a large square of foil and place a hamburger patty in the middle of it. Add salt and pepper.
Place Chopped Onions on top.
Place diced potatoes on top of that.
Place baby carrots on top of the onions and potatoes. You can put a teaspoon of worcestershire on top before you close it up for extra flavor if you wish.
Close packet up and stack up into slow cooker. (we had to use two for our family).
Cook on high for at least 5-6 hours. We found the ones towards the top didn’t get done as quick as the ones at the bottom, so you may want to rotate them once during the day. When they are finished, the potatoes and carrots should be tender.
Enjoy that flavorful food!
Stay tuned, later this week, I’ll show you another dinner we made while we were there. Another packet meal!

Hi Sarah – do you think these would come out ok if I prepped the packet, placed them in the fridge until we were 6-ish hours from ready to eat? I work outside of the home so, for us, crockpot recipes short of 10 hours do not work unless I can ask my (wonderful) mom to just take them straight from the fridge to the crockpot. Thanks!!
