I’m a homeschool mom of 6 children, 4 of whom are school age. Every year, I attend a homeschool conference and I’m ALWAYS glad that I did!
5 Things I do Before a Homeschool Conference
- Research the Speakers, taking note of which ones that I would enjoy listening to and that I could benefit from listening to that year.
- Print out the schedule of the Homeschool Conference I’m going to and circle which sessions I’d like to go to. If there are 2, circle both so that I’m able to make my decision between the 2 once I’m at the conference.
- Decide what curriculum I’m interested in seeing at the vendor hall.
- Take inventory of the books that I’ll be needing to replace or get the next one of, so that I can save myself shipping money.
- Discuss my book budget with my husband so that I know how much I can feel free to spend.
Why I Love Attending Homeschool Conferences Each Year
- I get my homeschool mom battery recharged! Once Spring hits, the kids start getting restless, the mamas start getting restless and we all just want to play outside in the sun. Going to a Spring homeschool conference gets me refreshed and helps keep me on track for the rest of the school year. Of course, not all homeschool conferences are in the Spring, but even if your conference isn’t, you will still feel that excitement for the next school year that a homeschool conference brings. Listening to several speakers present ideas to you that you’ve either not heard of before or not thought of in a long time, really helps to build your enthusiasm.
- I get to touch and feel the curriculum and books. The vendor hall always has tons and tons of choices of books and curriculum to look at. I love to personally flip through those books to see what I think about them, before I make the purchase. I can also talk with other moms and vendors about the curriculum to see what their experience has been with it.
- Just getting away, helps me to focus on my family’s needs. Sometimes, just stepping away from the situation makes me gain some much needed focus on our school plans. When I go for a night or two to the conference, I feel refreshed, I have time to think about the direction our family should be taking and I come back ready to conquer the world.
On April 5th & 6th, my husband and I will be in Kansas City, attending the Midwest Parent Educators Homeschool Conference. Not only am I attending, but I’m also going to be serving as a panelist in one of the sessions. The name of the session is called, “Using Technology in Your Homeschool”. Homeschooling parents from the area will be able to show up and ask us any questions they have about how we use technology in our homeschools.
