I love wood working! I don’t have nearly enough time to mess around in the sawdust, but I absolutely love seeing what I can do with a piece of wood. Naturally, when it was time for me to plan the craft for our local girls’ Bright Lights group, I chose something using a piece of wood! In our group, we have girls as young as 7 and occasionally a girl as old as 17 years old. We have a wide age range to accommodate.
A while ago, I had decided to make name blocks for a baby gift for a friend of mine. They turned out really cute, so I decided to pull out my mad Modge Podging skills and try doing the same sort of thing as ornaments. If the girls didn’t want to design their own ornament, they could use several blocks and design a name or word instead. This is how we did it.
Supplies:
- Wooden blocks – You can choose to buy a long 2×2 piece of wood and cut it into equal sized blocks OR if you don’t have a saw at home that you’re comfortable with using, you can buy the blocks pre-cut in the unfinished wood department of craft stores like Hobby Lobby. You’ll spend more money on the ones from the craft stores, but it would save you a couple of steps.
- Sandpaper
- Spray Paint (optional)
- Scrapbook Paper or old Wallpaper books
- Scrapbook Letter Stickers
- Mod Podge
- Scissors
- Paper Punches (optional) – We used a square punch, but you don’t have to have it. You can draw around your block to cut it the right size. Also, you may want to use other punches or cutouts to glue onto your ornament.
- Ribbon
- Picture Hanging Eyelets
