5 Days of Organizing & Cleaning Your Kitchen
brought to you by Fridge Coaster!
Day 1: Cleaning Under Your Kitchen Sink.
Today is Day 2 and we are talking about Cleaning out your refrigerator.
Ugh. I hate to clean my refrigerator. It can get messy so fast!
I’ve got a couple stories about my fridge to share with you, first. I hope you don’t mind!
One day, I came home and opened my refrigerator and felt like it wasn’t very cold inside. Oh no! (Visions of buying a new fridge were haunting me at that point!) I had noticed that it didn’t seem quite all the way shut when I opened it, but thought surely that a little tiny crack couldn’t make it so warm in there. As I continued to investigate, I discovered a big puddle of butter dripping from the butter holder at the top of the door all the way down to the floor of my fridge. Now how did it get hot enough in there to melt the butter? Then it dawned on me! My refrigerator door was open just enough to leave the light on in there. The butter was up against the light causing it to melt and drip all down my door. Lesson learned. ALWAYS make sure your refrigerator is sealed before you leave the house for the day! Thankfully, my refrigerator recovered from our mistake and I’m still using it to this day!
Of course we all know that we’re supposed to make sure our refrigerator is shut, but I never thought about what could happen, besides warm or spoiled food of course if it wasn’t. I’m telling you, this was so barely open that I almost wouldn’t have noticed it. Of course, if you read yesterday’s post, you may not think that’s a big deal since I’m not very observant anyway. 🙂 When you have a large family, weird things happen. Once, we walked out to the building where we keep our chest freezer and it was wide open (thanks to a child who went to get something out of it for me). Thankfully, we caught it in time!
My 2nd story is about my freezer this time:
I was moving and had several friends over to help me get packed up. My friend Brandi decided to help herself to some ice from the refrigerator door ice maker. What she didn’t know is that we never hooked it up, so it didn’t work. But…the funny thing is that it DID work for her. It dumped a cup full of frozen peas right into her cup. Yep….I guess we spilled a bag of peas in there..and never knew it. Such a funny way to find out! I still get the giggles when I think about that.
You wanna know what’s ironic about that story? I just cleaned out my refrigerator AND guess what I found in the ice maker? You guessed it, a spilled bag of frozen peas! Somebody needs to stop putting her open bag of frozen peas in the ice maker. I should probably get that ice maker hooked up one of these days. I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself if it actually worked for me!
Anyway….on to my refrigerator which drastically needed some help!
Now….why on earth does my refrigerator look like that? I have no idea. I only noticed it yesterday. 🙂 (yep, still totally unobservant!). I have 6 cute children who like to put their art work on there in random places. My baby clears the bottom part of the refrigerator off every day or two. And we keep coupons clipped to the fridge sometimes, too. Add to that some chaos….and this is what you’ve got! 🙂
The inside of my freezer looked like this:
Yes, that’s pretty chaotic, too! I was not knowing what all was in there any more.
I first took everything out shelf by shelf and wiped them down. When I got to the bottom, I was completely grossed out by the yuck at the bottom of the freezer. Thankfully, it wiped out relatively easily and before I put everything back, I put one of my new Fridge Coasters in the bottom! I love how it looks!
Have you heard about Fridge Coasters before?
They are basically a fashionable liner made specifically for your refrigerator. It absorbs any moisture and catches any spills so that the rest of your refrigerator doesn’t get dirty too quickly. I love my blue chevron stripes! Here’s how it looks in the bottom of my freezer:
After that, I put everything back in. I totally emptied the ice container so we no longer have peas in there! I made a meat shelf on top, a smoothie shelf under the ice maker, 2 veggie shelves and then the larger shelf on bottom for the ice cream. I threw several freezer burned things out and organized the door a bit better. Here’s the finished product:
The inside of the refrigerator looked like this:
You can see the major disorganization. Cheese spilled on the floor of the fridge. Things placed in odd places. Too many bottles in the door. It was overwhelming to say the least. We kept losing things in there!
I took things out shelf by shelf and placed like things together.
Remember the melted butter spill?
After wiping down all of the shelves and reorganizing them, I placed my new Fridge Coaster on the shelves that tend to get the dirtiest! I even placed them in the bottoms of 2 of my drawers! I’m going to love that. My drawers tend to get the nastiest! Don’t they look so nice?!
My 1 year old came in and helped me out. He’s so good at helping me! 🙂
A dream come true! All of my salad dressing in one place! I had to pitch a few nearly empty bottles to get them all to fit!
After it was all done, I took the magnets off the front of the refrigerator and cleaned it. I even used a toothbrush with Bon Ami cleaner on the door handle as it is made of textured plastic and tried to hold onto the dirt.
I haven’t decided if I’m going to let any magnets and papers get back on again. I’m kind of enjoying the fresh, clean look!
When my 15 year old son got home from football practice tonight, he jumped back in surprise at how different it looked! I must admit, I love it, too.
