How to Make Plaster of Paris, using Common Household Ingredients
My oldest daughter was in need of some plaster of paris for a science experiment that she had in her Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day book. I had gone to the hardware store (the only store we have available without travelling to a larger town) and the only option was an $8 bag of plaster of paris. I wasn’t too keen on spending that much, so I decided to make my own instead.
All you need is 2-3 cups of flour and 1-2 cups of warm water.
Stir it together until you have a smooth consistency that is easy to stir, like this:
Once it is all smooth, it is ready for use. Keep in mind, that by going the cheapskate route of making it yourself, it will take longer to dry out. We have put ours into the oven at 170 degrees to speed up the drying process.
If you are just using it to dip strips of paper or gauze into, you can also make it out of 2 parts glue and 1 part water. Have fun being frugal & creative!
